About Jarratt

Jarratt is a Greensville-Sussex border town with a railroad past still visible in the map. It was a stop on the Petersburg Railroad in 1848 and incorporated in 1938, and the old Petersburg line now survives as CSX's North End Subdivision. The former Virginian Railway also met the line here; most of that route is gone, though a spur still serves the Georgia-Pacific Jarratt Sheathing Plant. Interstate 95 runs just west, with Exit 20 putting Jarratt between Emporia and Petersburg. Even the school map follows the county line, splitting students between Greensville and Sussex systems. Jarratt's identity is basically a crossing: two counties, old rail routes, and a highway nearby.
