Jasper, AR

Jasper is the Newton County seat in Arkansas's Ozark Mountains, with the courthouse square, the Little Buffalo River, and Scenic Highway 7 setting the town's shape. The Little Buffalo runs through the center, where Bradley Park adds a walking path, picnic spots, fishing, and swimming at the end of Clark Street. The town's position also puts it on the way to the Buffalo National River: Pruitt Trailhead is about 5.6 miles north on Highway 7, while Scenic Point sits 3.6 miles south with views over the Little Buffalo and Buffalo River valleys. Jasper's road map is short, but the water and bluff country open quickly beyond it.

Jasper's smaller institutions fill in the square-and-river picture. The Newton County Library at 230 South Stone Street holds family and land records, offers free Wi-Fi and public computers, and runs regular classes and events. The Bradley House Museum, operated by the Newton County Historical Society, keeps local history and geology in a former doctor's home on West Clark Street. The Jasper School District serves K-12 students and includes Jasper Elementary and Jasper High School. Between the library, museum, school, and Bradley Park, Jasper has several places where the county seat's daily routine meets the Ozark landscape.
