Jefferson is a quiet, historic borough located in southern York County. The community started out in the early 1800s as a convenient stopping point along the travel route between Baltimore and York. A local tavern owner named Frederick Kraft laid out the town lots in 1814 and named the settlement after Thomas Jefferson. Today, the area keeps that classic rural Pennsylvania charm, surrounded by the open farmland and rolling hills of Codorus Township.

If you are moving here, the first quirk you will notice is the mailing address. Even though the municipality is officially Jefferson Borough, your mail will be addressed to Codorus. The post office assigned the Codorus postal name in the nineteenth century to avoid mix-ups with other Pennsylvania towns named Jefferson.
