Jefferson, NC

Jefferson is the Ashe County seat in the North Carolina mountains, with the New River running through town. The 2020 census counted 1,622 residents. The town was laid out in 1799 as Jeffersonton before taking the shorter Jefferson name, making it one of the early communities named for Thomas Jefferson. The Ashe County Courthouse and Poe Fish Weir are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The surrounding roads make Jefferson feel like a hinge between ridge communities and the flatter valleys to the east.

County offices and local shops give the center a reason to stay busy. Jefferson's center has the courthouse-town feel of a mountain county seat, with roads climbing out toward farms, ridges, and the New River valley. Winter brings more snow and cold than the lower Piedmont, and the river adds a different kind of movement through town. Jefferson is a small Appalachian seat with an old public square, a river people can follow, and a name that reaches back to the first years of the county.
