About Jeffersonville

Jeffersonville's riverfront public-space network begins on a bridge. The Big Four Railroad Bridge, completed in 1895, reopened in May 2014 as a walking and cycling crossing of the Ohio River between Jeffersonville and Louisville. Its Indiana landing is Big Four Station, where a pavilion, playground, restrooms, historic markers, and a fountain turn the bridge ramp into a downtown park. In 2026, the farmers market used that pavilion on Saturday mornings from June through October, and summer concerts continued on Friday evenings at nearby Warder Park. The bridge also meets the Ohio River Greenway, a roughly seven-mile riverfront route linking Jeffersonville with Clarksville and New Albany. The riverfront is active, but it is not a complete picture of a 34.08-square-mile city. For 2020 through 2024, 72 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied and the mean trip to work was 20 minutes.

The city's 2025 downtown plan found that residents valued historic buildings, small businesses, restaurants, festivals, the farmers market, the greenway, and access to Louisville. The same public process recorded practical frictions: empty or inactive storefronts, irregular business hours, traffic speed on Court Avenue, 10th Street, and Riverside Drive, and limited grocery options. The plan also identifies Norton Clark Hospital as a major institution spanning several blocks and calls for continued work on Spring Street, Court Avenue, the greenway, and the former JeffBoat riverfront. Present-day Jeffersonville therefore combines a county-seat service center and broad residential city with a downtown connected to another state on foot and bicycle.
