Jeffersonville, OH

Jeffersonville was laid out in 1831 by Wright and Chipman Robinson as a trading post for the surrounding farming country, with town lots selling for five dollars. The village was incorporated in 1838, and Main Street soon filled the role you would expect from a rural crossroads: shops, a blacksmith, churches, grain mills, and the news of the township. By 1880, the village was linked to larger markets, and its houses and shops filled the gap between the farms. Later, an east-west state road and the Detroit & Southern railroad strengthened that connection.

The village still sits in that practical Fayette County role. Village council handles water, sewer, and utility service, and the community pool remains one of the local gathering points. Between the downtown memorial and the pool, Jeffersonville keeps a couple of simple landmarks for a place that grew by serving farm country. The local scoop is a small Ohio village that built its name on trade, then kept the same job in a more modern form.
