Jemez Pueblo, NM

Jemez Pueblo is a federally recognized tribe and census-designated place in Sandoval County, known to its people as Walatowa - “this is the place.” The 2020 census counted 1,963 residents in the CDP; the Pueblo's own community profile lists more than 3,400 tribal members. Towa is the language, the Jemez River feeds the valley, and crops such as corn, chile, squash, and watermelon still belong to the seasonal rhythm. The red-rock road is part of the introduction. This is a living community, not a museum stop.

Tribal government, court, health and human services, schools, member-owned pottery and jewelry businesses, and the Walatowa Timber Industry all sit alongside older traditions. Red Rock country gives the place its dramatic setting, but the local scoop is in the day-to-day work of keeping language, land, family, and government connected. Visitors are asked to check in with the Governor's Office and follow community rules, a small detail that says a lot about entering someone else's home.
