Jewell Junction, IA

Jewell Junction, usually just Jewell, is a Hamilton County city at the northern junction of U.S. 69 and Iowa Highway 175. The 2020 census counted 1,216 residents. South Hamilton Community School District is headquartered on Division Street and serves a rural area around Jewell, while city hall, local businesses, churches, and the municipal cemetery give the town a compact center. Anderson Goose Lake, a National Natural Landmark east of town, adds a notable piece of prairie-and-water country to the nearby landscape. Ames and Webster City are the larger regional stops.

Jewell was laid out in 1880 where two railroads met and was named for David T. Jewell, who owned the original townsite. A depot, sidings, stockyards, shops, and a post office followed, and the rail junction made Jewell a shipping point for farm country. Freight trains still pass through, though the old passenger-era bustle is gone. The school district, grain country, and highway now set the weekly rhythm. Jewell is one of those Iowa towns where the name Junction remains useful: it tells you why the streets are there and why the community still serves the farms around it.
