John Day, OR

John Day sits at the crossroads of Highways 26 and 395 in eastern Oregon, tucked into a sunny river valley between the Strawberry Mountains and the Blue Mountains. It is the largest town in Grant County, serving as the main service hub for local ranches, forest workers, and travelers passing through the high desert. The community grew out of the nineteenth-century gold rush and timber boom, but it also carries a distinctive cultural past shaped by a large Chinese immigrant population that thrived here in the 1880s. You can still explore that history today at the Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site, an extraordinarily well-preserved apothecary and general store right near the center of town.
