Johnsonburg, NJ

Johnsonburg is an unincorporated census-designated place in Frelinghuysen Township, but it once carried more county weight. In 1753 it became the first seat of Sussex County and home to the court and jail; the early name Log Gaol came from that role. It also grew as a stagecoach stop where routes crossed between Dover and Stroudsburg, and between Albany and Philadelphia. The village sits in a landscape of valleys, farmland, marshes, rock ledges, old houses, mills, and lime kilns.

That stage-road history is still the best way to read Johnsonburg: the place grew because people, mail, and goods had to pass through. Later agriculture and dairy kept the roads busy, while the old railroad right-of-way added another layer to the township. Today Johnsonburg is a small community inside Frelinghuysen, with the township office on Main Street and the surrounding roads still doing what they have always done—linking the valley to the next place. You can still feel the difference between a village built for passage and a suburb built around parking lots.
