Johnsonburg, PA

Johnsonburg sits where two branches of the Clarion River meet in Elk County, a setting that helped turn a farming and lumbering area into an industrial borough. Founded in 1810 and incorporated in 1891, the town grew around paper, glass, rail, and the businesses that served mill workers. Paper remains the signature industry: the Johnsonburg mill dominates the north end of the town's skyline and continues the line from older paper companies to the current Domtar operation. The river valleys and the mill stack give Johnsonburg its clearest orientation.

Downtown has a separate story in the six-acre Johnsonburg Commercial Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1999. Center Street, carrying U.S. 219, along with Market Street and Bridge Street hold brick buildings from the 1890s through the late 1930s, with Italianate, Colonial Revival, Neoclassical, and Art Deco details. The Johnsonburg Community Trust's Heritage Education Center at 569 Market Street serves as a welcome point for self-guided tours and local events. Add the elementary and high schools and the working mill, and the local map comes together: a river town where paper industry, historic commercial blocks, and school life still share the same few streets.
