Johnston stands apart from the typical Des Moines suburb thanks to its unique backstory. The community grew out of an early 1900s electric rail stop, an active National Guard training base at Camp Dodge, and groundbreaking agricultural research fields that eventually grew into Corteva. You can still feel that heritage today. Large military grounds and corporate ag-science campuses sit side by side with modern residential neighborhoods, giving the town a distinctive footprint with plenty of open breathing room.

Geographically, Johnston sits just north of Interstate 80 and extends toward the boating and camping spots around Saylorville Lake. Merle Hay Road runs straight through the middle of town, serving as the main strip for everyday shopping, dining, and local businesses. Housing options range from quiet, established mid-century streets to newer subdivisions expanding across the north and west sides. Because large institutional properties sit between certain neighborhoods, side streets do not always follow a standard grid. When scouting out a neighborhood, it helps to test drive your route to local schools, grocery stores, and the highway.

When it comes to getting outdoors, Terra Park is the main hub for local activity. Spanning over 200 acres alongside the Beaver Creek natural area, the park features a stocked fishing lake, accessible playgrounds, pickleball courts, and scenic walking paths. Johnston also features an impressive trail system with more than 45 miles of paved and natural routes winding through town and linking up with regional biking paths. The city continues to add new connections and safer street crossings, making it easy to fit a walk, run, or family bike ride into your daily routine.

For community events, residents gather at the Johnston Town Center on Merle Hay Road. The central plaza, known as The Yard, hosts lively summer farmers markets opened with the ring of a cowbell, along with weekend concerts, outdoor movie nights, and a winter ice-skating rink. Right nearby, the Johnston Public Library offers bright study spaces, kids' programs, and community workshops. History fans can also show a photo ID at the Camp Dodge gate to visit the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum. Altogether, Johnston offers a safe, vibrant, and well-connected place to live right on the edge of the Des Moines metro.
