Johnston grew from a railway stop, a military installation, and seed-corn research. The community took the name Johnston Station from John F. Johnston, an agent for the electric interurban that began carrying passengers and freight between Carlisle, Des Moines, Johnston, and Perry in 1907. Camp Dodge has served as a military training site in the city's north since 1908. In the late 1920s, Henry A. Wallace's local hybrid-corn experiments led to Pioneer Hi-Bred, now Corteva. Its 2020–2024 housing figures show 70.8 percent owner occupancy, a median owner-occupied value of $369,100, monthly costs of $2,361 for owners with a mortgage, and median gross rent of $1,338. Present-day gathering spaces follow trails, parks, the library, and the redeveloped Merle Hay Road corridor. Johnston maintains more than 45 miles of hard- and soft-surface trails. Terra Park forms part of a recreational area exceeding 200 acres, with an eight-acre fishing lake, accessible trails and play structures, lawns used for concerts and games, and a civic shelter.

At Johnston Town Center, the green called The Yard combines a splash pad that becomes a synthetic skating rink in winter with scheduled concerts, movies, and a summer farmers market; the site also includes City Hall and a trailhead. Johnston Public Library complements those outdoor spaces with programming for children, teens, and adults, an art gallery, reservable study and meeting rooms, technology help, home delivery, and remote book returns at two elementary schools. Camp Dodge is not only a working installation: the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum on the post opens its collections and special programs to the public, though visitors must present government photo identification to enter.
