About Johnston
Johnston is an Edgefield County town on the ridge between the clay hills to the north and sand hills to the south, where three river systems run away from the plateau. That geography gives Johnston its old nickname, the Hub of the Ridge; the peach orchards give it the more famous one. The railroad helped create the town, and State 121 still crosses State 23 at the center. Johnston is western South Carolina in a peach-and-crossroads arrangement, with the ridge doing the organizing.
