Jonesville, LA

Jonesville occupies a dramatic spot in Catahoula Parish, at the meeting of the Ouachita, Tensas, and Little rivers. North of town, the Ouachita and Tensas become the Black River, so waterways are not background scenery here; they shape the roads, fields, work, and memory of the place. Jonesville is also tied to the Troyville Earthworks, a major Native American mound complex that once covered much of the area. Only part of that landscape remains, including the Great Mound, but the earthworks give the town a deep time horizon that reaches well beyond its nineteenth-century streets.

Modern Jonesville is the largest town in Catahoula Parish and a service center for the surrounding river country. Fourth Street and US 84, town offices, schools, churches, small businesses, and parish roads draw daily activity into the center, while soybean and cotton fields spread out beyond it. Plantation-era houses and the old mill story add more layers: Jonesville has been a place of farming, river transport, industry, and flood-season attention. The result is a town where the map is inseparable from the history — three rivers, an ancient mound site, and a working Louisiana community sharing the same ground.
