Juniata, NE

Juniata is the oldest town in Adams County, Nebraska, founded in the era when the Burlington Railroad was laying out new communities across the plains. The railroad chose the name from a river in Pennsylvania. Juniata was platted and organized in late 1871, became the county seat, hosted the first school district in Adams County, and published the first Adams County Gazette. Those early offices gave the village a civic role beyond its size. The 2020 census counted 744 residents, and the community remains part of the Hastings micropolitan area.

Juniata’s history also includes the loss of that county-seat role. Hastings grew at the junction of two railroads, and an 1877 vote moved the county government there after a long dispute. The railroad that first made Juniata important therefore also helped shift the county’s center eastward. Today the village’s meaning sits in that older layer of Adams County history: a place founded for rail travel, briefly at the center of county government, and still tied to the agricultural and civic network around Hastings. Its name carries a Pennsylvania river into Nebraska’s plains.
