Kankakee is a city and the county seat of Kankakee County, Illinois, situated along the Kankakee River in the rural plains south of Chicago. Founded in 1854 and taking its name from a Miami-Illinois word meaning open or exposed land, the community of approximately 24,000 is the principal city of the Kankakee-Bourbonnais-Bradley metropolitan area. Public education is administered by Kankakee School District 111, and Kankakee Community College serves the broader region.
