Kapolei, HI

Kapolei takes its name from the volcanic cone Puʻu o Kapolei; in Hawaiian, puʻu means “hill,” while Kapo lei means “beloved Kapo.” A master plan was drafted in 1955, and Oʻahu’s 1977 general plan designated Kapolei as the island’s second urban center in relation to Honolulu. Residential construction began in the late 1980s on land formerly used for sugarcane and pineapple. The planned community had 21,411 residents in 2020. Its wider area includes Campbell Industrial Park and Barbers Point Harbor, the state’s second-largest deepwater port. The University of Hawaiʻi at West Oʻahu moved to a new Kapolei campus in 2012, followed by Hawaii Tokai International College in 2015.
