Kenansville, NC

Kenansville is Duplin County's seat, a courthouse town named for James Kenan, a North Carolina legislator. The Kenan family's Liberty Hall stands in town as an early-nineteenth-century house museum; descendants built the present house after an earlier family home burned. The house was donated to Duplin County in 1964, restored, furnished, and opened as a museum in 1968. Its name still ties the town to a family whose political and philanthropic history reaches across eastern North Carolina.

The Kenansville Historic District and Needham Whitfield Herring House add residences, churches, and Greek Revival architecture around the county-seat core. North Carolina Highways 11 and 50 pass through town, while Highway 24 bypasses to the southeast. County offices, local schools, Liberty Hall tours, and small businesses fill the surrounding map, with Duplin's agricultural roads running out in every direction. Kenansville is a North Carolina town where a courthouse, an old family house, and a working county government share the same few blocks. The house still gives the courthouse town a human address.
