Kenesaw, NE

Kenesaw is an Adams County village in the Hastings area, with 917 residents in the 2020 census. The village sits in farm country and keeps its own school district, including Kenesaw High School—a point locals emphasize because it is unusual for a village this size. The school, post office, grocery, restaurants, bank, senior center, nursing home, pool, and park give Kenesaw more day-to-day infrastructure than its population might suggest. Hastings is the nearest larger hub for shopping, medical care, and wider services.

Kenesaw began as a Burlington railroad town: the site was chosen in 1871 and the line came through in 1872. The name refers to the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia. Rail brought a depot, grain elevators, mills, and a first wave of businesses, while the surrounding wheat farms kept the town working after the passenger era faded. A 1967 flood is part of the local memory, too. Today the pool, park, senior center, and school are the small set of places that keep village life in one place.
