Kennesaw, GA

Kennesaw has deep roots as a classic Georgia railroad town. Originally settled in the 1830s under the name Big Shanty, the area grew along the Western and Atlantic Railroad and later gained fame during the Civil War's Great Locomotive Chase. You can still see that history up close at the Southern Museum downtown, home to the famous steam engine known as The General. The city has grown into a welcoming community of nearly 40,000 residents, but active tracks still run right through the center of town, keeping its historic railroad character front and center.

Downtown Kennesaw serves as the city's favorite gathering spot, filled with local restaurants, taprooms, and walkable sidewalks. Depot Park sits right in the middle of it, featuring an outdoor amphitheater that hosts regular weekend concerts, movie nights, and seasonal community events. Each spring, neighbors fill the streets for the annual Big Shanty Festival, while warm summer evenings bring food trucks and live music during First Friday block parties. It gives the area a tight-knit community feel where people actually run into their neighbors.

A few minutes east of the historic center, Kennesaw State University brings plenty of student energy to the Chastain Road area. As one of Georgia's largest public universities, KSU offers Division I sports, theater productions, and campus events, alongside being a major local employer. Along nearby Cobb Parkway and Interstate 75, you will find major grocery stores, shopping centers, medical offices, and dining spots. Having these busy retail and commercial corridors right in town means you rarely have to drive into Atlanta just to run weekend errands.

When it comes to getting outside, Kennesaw has some of the best green spaces in Cobb County. Swift-Cantrell Park is the go-to spot for everyday recreation, spanning 42 acres with paved walking loops, an inclusive playground, a splash pad, dog parks, and a large concrete skatepark. Just down the road, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park offers over 18 miles of forested trails, leading up to clear summit views of the Atlanta skyline. Between local neighborhood parks and national park trails, there is plenty of room for walking, running, and weekend outings.
