Kenny Lake, AK

Kenny Lake is a census-designated place in Alaska's Copper River Census Area, stretched along the Edgerton Highway in the Copper River Valley. The 2020 census counted 234 people, down from 355 in 2010. Homes, farms, the school, and local services follow the highway between the Richardson Highway and the roads toward Wrangell–St. Elias National Park. The Edgerton Highway is Kenny Lake's practical link to the wider Alaska road system.

Kenny Lake's distinctive story is agricultural. Homesteaders came in the 1950s and 1960s because the soil offered farming potential, and the area was later renewed by the Alaska Homestead Act after the Kennecott mine closed in 1938. Ahtna people occupied the region long before those homesteads, and the Copper River School District still ties Kenny Lake School to the wider valley network. The Edgerton Highway also makes the community a stopping point for travelers heading toward McCarthy and Wrangell–St. Elias, with groceries, fuel, cabins, and nearby trails along the route. The local scoop is a highway-long Alaska farm community where school, agriculture, and the road to the park all share the same corridor.
