Kensett, AR

Kensett is a White County city just east of Searcy, and its story is almost impossible to separate from the rail lines. The Cairo and Fulton Railroad reached the area in 1872, the post office opened that October, and the settlement took its name from railroad director Thomas Kensett. A second line, the Missouri and North Arkansas, arrived in 1907, turning Kensett into a shipping point and trade center for Searcy and nearby White County towns.

The railroad also fed a lumber operation. Doniphan Lumber floated logs down the Little Red River, lifted them into a pond near Kensett, and milled them beside the town; the railroad shop and mill were major employers through World War II. Kensett's downtown later took a 1915 fire and the decline of its rail lines, but the city still has a working-school connection through Kensett Elementary and the Riverview district. Today Searcy is close enough to draw many jobs and services, yet Kensett's local shape still reads like a railroad-and-lumber town beside the Little Red River.
