Kernville, CA

Kernville started as a wild 1850s gold rush camp originally called Whiskey Flat, tucked into the Sierra Nevada foothills along the Kern River. When Lake Isabella was created in the 1950s, the original townsite was submerged beneath the reservoir, prompting locals to move their buildings a few miles up the road. That move shaped the present-day town, preserving its frontier roots while making room for the lake.

During dry years, dropping water levels still reveal old stone foundations and street outlines on the lakebed. Modern Kernville has grown into an inviting hub for outdoorsy residents, known for world-class whitewater rafting, trout fishing, and easy access to the Sequoia National Forest. Between everyday river recreation and the lively annual Whiskey Flat Days festival, the area offers a relaxed mountain lifestyle with plenty of Old West character.
