Kettleman City, CA

Kettleman City is a Kings County community at the base of the Kettleman Hills, 28 miles southwest of Hanford and 54 miles south of Fresno. Interstate 5 and State Route 41 meet here near the historic shoreline of Tulare Lake, the huge Central Valley lake whose old basin still shapes the area's water and farming story. The junction is built for distance: restaurants, fuel, lodging, and electric-vehicle charging serve people moving between Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Kettleman Hills took their name from Dave Kettleman, a nineteenth-century sheep and cattle raiser who grazed in the area.

The town's daily map is tied to the highway, but it has a school and neighborhood life behind the service strip. Kettleman City Elementary is part of Reef-Sunset Unified School District, and General Petroleum Street connects the school and local homes to the I-5/41 commercial area. The old ferry route from Lemoore and the later state highway show how the settlement became a stop in the San Joaquin Valley. Kettleman City is a place where the long haul and the local block meet: trucks, travelers, lake-country history, farm fields, a school, and residents who know the junction as home.
