Keystone, WV

Keystone started in the 1890s as a bustling coal town along the rail line, quickly growing into one of McDowell County's most active hubs. During the early twentieth century, it became well known for its strong Black leadership, thriving business district, and vibrant community spirit. Local leaders like newspaper editor Matthew Thomas Whittico helped put the town on the map, cementing the county's famous nickname, the "Free State of McDowell."

Today, Keystone is a quiet mountain community nestled in the hills of southern West Virginia. Life here moves at a relaxed pace, with residents staying closely connected to neighboring towns throughout the valley. School-age kids attend nearby Kimball Elementary and Mount View High School, and scenic routes through the mountains provide easy access to regional services and outdoor recreation.
