Kidron, OH

Kidron is a Wayne County census-designated place in southwestern Sugar Creek Township, in a landscape shaped by Swiss Mennonite settlement. In 1819, Mennonites from the Sonnenberg area of Switzerland came to Ohio seeking religious freedom and workable farmland; they first called the settlement Sonnenberg before Kidron became the common name. That beginning still turns up in the area's churches, farms, family names, and heritage organizations. Central Christian School provides K–12 education along Kidron Road, and Sonnenberg Mennonite Church continues the community's religious tradition.

The Kidron Community Historical Society operates the Kidron-Sonnenberg Heritage Center, with a museum and genealogy library focused on Amish and Mennonite family history. On the outskirts, Sonnenberg Village preserves historic buildings that include a 1907 church used as a welcome center, the 1832 Bixler House, a relocated Lehman house, a scribe-rule barn, gardens, and the Floyd R. Saurer Blacksmith Shop, restored with its tools arranged as they were when it closed in 1967. Students and volunteers help care for the grounds, while tours, performances, reunions, and farm events keep the campus in use. Kidron's local story is carried by faith, farming, school, and a remarkable amount of hands-on preservation.
