Kieler, WI

Kieler is an unincorporated community in the Town of Jamestown, set just north of the Wisconsin-Iowa line and close to Dubuque. The 2020 census counted 557 people, up from 497 in 2010. US 61 and US 151 carry regional traffic past the community, while Immaculate Conception sits on County HHH. That highway setting is unusually visible: the state rest area south of Kieler sits at the US 61/151 and Wisconsin 11/35 interchange, with a prairie-style building and a deck looking toward the Mississippi River. Two miles west, Fenley State Recreation Area adds 287 acres of hardwoods, bluffs, and overlooks above the river.

The place’s main gathering point is Immaculate Conception. The first Mass in its original stone church was held in July 1858; a 1896 remodel added the front entrance and twin towers, and a parish center was added in 2006. The parish school has older roots and moved into its current building in 1956. Today Holy Ghost–Immaculate Conception operates across two campuses, with preschool through second grade in Dickeyville and grades three through eight in Kieler. That combination of a long-running parish, a two-campus school, and a major highway interchange gives Kieler its local rhythm: church and school life on County HHH, regional movement on 61/151, and the Driftless river bluffs just beyond town.
