Kilmarnock, VA

Kilmarnock is a small Northern Neck town spread across Lancaster and Northumberland counties, near the mouth of the Rappahannock River. The 2020 census counted 1,445 residents. The town traces its roots to a 1650 settlement and was once known as "the Crossroads," a name that still fits the way the surrounding roads gather here. Kilmarnock also sits inside the Northern Neck wine appellation, though the local map is more practical than fancy: a hospital, school, shops, and the river country nearby. Rappahannock General Hospital has served the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula since 1977, and Lancaster Middle School sits in town.

It is a town where the hospital and river matter. The annual Holly Ball, founded in 1895 and held each December, is one of those long-running traditions that gives Kilmarnock a calendar of its own.
