About Kincheloe
Kincheloe is a Chippewa County census-designated place at the eastern end of Kinross Township, built around the former Kincheloe Air Force Base. The base began as a 1941 wartime airfield guarding the Soo Locks, was renamed in 1959 for Michigan test pilot Iven Kincheloe, and operated until the 1970s. Its airstrips, housing, and support grounds still define the local map, while The Oaks at Kincheloe occupies the old base golf course. Kincheloe is an Upper Peninsula community where an air base’s footprint became the town’s main landmark.
