Kinderhook, NY

Kinderhook is a Columbia County village within the larger Town of Kinderhook, with 1,170 residents in the 2020 census. U.S. 9 and County Route 21 meet at the village center, and Kinderhook Creek forms its southeastern edge. The village was chartered in 1838, and the Kinderhook Village District has been on the National Register since 1974. Martin Van Buren's birthplace was in the wider town, while his retirement home at Lindenwald lies about a mile south of the village, so presidential history is woven into the surrounding roads as well as the village blocks.

Most current activity clusters around the Village Square, the Kinderhook Memorial Library, and the Columbia County Historical Society's Museum & Library on Albany Avenue. The Saturday farmers' market runs at the square from May through October, and the library carries regular story times, clubs, workshops, and seasonal programs.
