King Salmon, AK

King Salmon sits on the north bank of the Naknek River on the Alaska Peninsula, about 16 miles upriver from Naknek and 284 miles southwest of the state's largest city. The census-designated place counted 307 residents in 2020. Its role is regional: King Salmon is the seat of neighboring Lake and Peninsula Borough, houses the headquarters for Katmai National Park and Preserve, and serves as the air gateway for travelers continuing into the park by small plane or water taxi. The Naknek River and nearby Naknek Lake set the geography, while King Salmon Airport puts this remote community into the wider Bristol Bay travel network.

World War II left another layer. The US Army Air Forces built an air base there, and the Army Corps of Engineers built a 25-kilometer road to Naknek in the 1940s and 1950s. Today, park access and aviation shape the practical picture around town, with the National Park Service, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and other agencies also present. With 307 people in 2020, King Salmon is compact in population, yet its map carries an airport, a river settlement, a borough seat serving another borough, and a direct connection to Katmai.
