About King
King is the Waupaca County community built around the Wisconsin Veterans Home on Rainbow Lake, a very different place from the separate Town of King in Lincoln County. The Grand Army of the Republic established the veterans' home in 1887 after Waupaca bought the Greenwood Park Resort Hotel and 78 acres by the lake. The campus later spread across hundreds of acres with cottages, a cemetery, chapels, a museum, and the commandant's residence. The community took its name from General Charles King, a Wisconsin soldier and National Guard leader. King is a small Chain O'Lakes place whose map is inseparable from the veterans' home that gave it a name.
