About Kingman

Kingman is the Kingman County seat, laid out in 1874 beside the Ninnescah River and named for Samuel A. Kingman, chief justice of the Kansas Supreme Court. The county-seat question was settled by election in 1881, when Kingman’s temporary status became permanent. A 1907–08 courthouse still gives the city its civic center, while the river keeps the local geography legible. Kingman is south-central Kansas in a courthouse-and-river combination, with the county name and city name sharing the same origin.
