About Kingsford Heights

Kingsford Heights is a LaPorte County town created around the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant during World War II. The 2020 census counted 1,335 residents. Originally planned as Victory City, it was designed to house plant workers and their families, with homes, businesses, civic buildings, schools, a community center, and a park. The wartime plan shaped the street pattern and the town's unusual scale, even though the plant closed and the federal project stopped growing after the wars. The original neighborhood plan remains visible in the town's broad streets and shared civic spaces.

After the remaining residents bought the land from the government, Kingsford Heights incorporated to keep local services in place. Today, the town has an elementary school, town hall, police and volunteer fire departments, a branch of the La Porte County Public Library, a community center, and a central park with baseball fields. The former industrial purpose remains part of the town's identity, while those institutions describe the present-day residential community that grew from it.
