Kingston, UT

Kingston is a small Piute County town on the East Fork of the Sevier River, reached by U.S. 62 at the mouth of Kingston Canyon. The river and canyon give the settlement its physical outline, with broad seasonal temperature swings marking life in this high desert valley. Kingston was settled in 1876 and incorporated in 1935, but its central story begins with Thomas Rice King and his five sons, who came from Fillmore looking for a place to establish a United Order.

The communal idea belongs to the town’s founding chapter, not to a preserved frontier tableau. Kingston today is a compact rural municipality, with a town office, a few blocks of homes, and long stretches of Piute County landscape between it and the next settlement. The name honors the King family, while the road through the canyon keeps the town connected to the East Fork and the wider Sevier country. Kingston is the kind of Utah place that reads on a map as a tiny dot, then opens into a whole valley once the river and canyon are taken into account.
