Kinmundy, IL

Kinmundy is Marion County’s seat, a southern Illinois city shaped by the railroad, a fire-rebuilt downtown, and the East Fork of the Kaskaskia River. The town was laid out east of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1857 and incorporated as a city in 1867. The 2020 census counted 733 residents. The old railroad line remains legible in the city’s route map, with Illinois 37 passing through the center and Interstate 57 close by.

Kinmundy’s historic pieces gather around that working-town history. The Italianate Calendar Rohrbough House is on the National Register, as are the Illinois Central Railroad Water Tower and Pump House. The log cabin village and its man-made lake add a hands-on setting for the annual fall craft fair, while the county-seat role keeps courthouse business and local services tied to the same small downtown grid. That history gives the city a clear center even at its present size. Kinmundy is a place where railroad geometry, county government, and farm-country landmarks still fit together.
