Kinsley, KS

Kinsley is the county seat of Edwards County, a western Kansas city along U.S. Highway 50 about 35 miles east of Dodge City. The 2020 census counted 1,456 residents. The community began as Petersburg, laid out in 1873, and was later known as Peter’s City before the Kinsley name settled in. Today the highway, county courthouse, and surrounding plains give the city its basic shape: a government center serving a wide rural county.

Kinsley-Offerle USD 347 serves local students, tying the city to the nearby farm and ranch country. Highway 50 carries travelers east and west, while the county seat’s offices bring a different kind of traffic into town. Kinsley is small by city standards, but its role is larger than its population because Edwards County business, school life, and long-distance travel all converge here. The sequence from Petersburg to Peter’s City to Kinsley also gives the town a useful local timeline, one that follows the changing names of a settlement on the western plains.
