Kirbyville, TX

Kirbyville is a Jasper County city that grew out of a railroad meeting the timber country. R.P. Allen and John Henry Kirby laid out the original townsite along the Gulf, Beaumont and Kansas City Railroad, and the first lots sold May 1, 1895. Conn and Withers Lumber built the first sawmill the next year; Kirby Lumber later became one of the town's big employers, and a 1917 fire ended that mill's run. The Jasper and Eastern Railroad reached Kirbyville in 1904, giving the place another rail connection and a reason to keep its Main Street pointed toward freight and trade.

Kirbyville incorporated in 1926, and the old mill pond still marks the early lumber story. State Forest No. 1 lies a few miles east, with the Big Thicket region, the Neches River's Dam B reservoir, and nearby lakes and creeks shaping the wider Jasper-Newton county map. In town, Kirbyville Consolidated Independent School District and its High School Wildcats are part of the everyday identity. Hurricane Rita passed close in 2005, another reminder that this Piney Woods town sits in a landscape where weather, timber, rail, and water all show up in the local story.
