Knoxville, PA

Knoxville is a Tioga County borough in northwestern Pennsylvania, with 682 people at the 2020 census. The town was laid out and settled in 1835 on land then situated in Deerfield Township and was incorporated as a borough in May 1851. Its name honors Archibald and William Knox, who established themselves in business in the area between 1815 and 1825. Older county histories place Knoxville at the meeting of Troup's Creek and the Cowanesque River, a useful clue to why the borough's location mattered before modern roads took over.

By 1899, Knoxville had four churches: Deerfield Baptist, First Methodist, Union Church, and a Presbyterian congregation. That list says a lot about the borough's 19th-century civic footprint, when churches, merchants, and the river junction shaped the daily map. Knoxville is now part of the Northern Tioga School District, tying local students to a wider rural education system.
