Kokomo earned its nickname as the "City of Firsts" for good reason. A late-1800s natural gas boom kicked off a wave of innovation, drawing tinkerers and entrepreneurs who helped shape the early automotive world. Elwood Haynes built and tested one of America's earliest gas-powered cars here in 1894, while other local pioneers developed early car radios and durable metal alloys. You can still see the elegance of that boom era at the Seiberling Mansion, a stunning Victorian estate that now serves as the county museum. That spirit of practical invention runs deep in the town's roots and still defines its local character today.

That industrial heritage is alive and well in the local job market. Major employers like Stellantis and Haynes International have long anchored the economy, keeping advanced manufacturing at the core of daily life. The city is also stepping into the future of automotive technology with massive investments in electric vehicle battery manufacturing through partnerships with Samsung SDI. These new facilities are bringing in fresh talent, new businesses, and an increasingly international community, making the city a steady hub for engineering and tech careers in north-central Indiana.

Life around town centers on a walkable downtown district anchored by the historic courthouse square. It is an easy place to spend an afternoon, with local coffee shops, independent restaurants, and rotating public art. Community events keep the calendar full, from monthly First Friday street fairs to the summer Strawberry Festival and the classic car shows of the Haynes-Apperson Festival. Down on the south side, Indiana University Kokomo brings a lively campus feel, giving residents easy access to collegiate sports, performing arts, and continuing education close to home.

Outdoor recreation is woven right through the middle of the city thanks to Wildcat Creek and the Walk of Excellence trail network. During the warmer months, locals catch summer baseball games at Kokomo Municipal Stadium, cool off at the Kokomo Beach Family Aquatic Center, or attend outdoor concerts by the river.
