Kongiganak, AK

Kongiganak, known locally as "Kong," is a small coastal village set along the Kongiganak River near Kuskokwim Bay in southwestern Alaska. Home to nearly 500 residents, the community is completely off the road grid, making bush planes the primary link to regional hubs like Bethel. Daily travel around the village happens on wooden boardwalks, with folks using four-wheelers and boats during the summer, then switching over to snowmachines once the tundra freezes in winter.

Ayagina'ar Elitnaurvik, the local school serving preschool through 12th grade, sits at the heart of the community and weaves Yup'ik language and traditions directly into the classroom. Everyday amenities are modest, including a couple of churches, small convenience stores, and a local clinic, with life largely revolving around subsistence fishing, hunting, and community gatherings.
