Kotlik, AK

Kotlik is a Yup'ik city on the east bank of Kotlik Slough in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, about 35 miles northeast of Emmonak. The town sits where the Kotlik and Little Kotlik rivers meet, in a broad wetland landscape that opens toward the Yukon Delta and the Bering Sea. Water is the practical map here: boats, winter trails, snow machines, and seasonal ice shape how people reach work, school, and neighboring communities. The climate brings long cold winters, shorter warm summers, wind, and low visibility, so the land and weather are part of everyday planning.

Kotlik's local life follows the seasonal round of fishing, trapping, hunting, and gathering, alongside stores, city services, and the Lower Yukon School District's K–12 Kotlik School. The community is also connected to the larger Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, a vast expanse of river channels, tundra, and wildlife habitat. Yup'ik culture is present tense, not a museum piece: family, language, food gathering, and village events give the place its rhythm. Kotlik is a remote delta city where the slough is a road, the school is a gathering point, and subsistence knowledge still travels with the seasons.
