Kotzebue, AK

Kotzebue, also known by its traditional Iñupiaq name Qikiqtaġruk, is a coastal community of about 3,000 residents situated on a narrow peninsula above the Arctic Circle. For centuries, Iñupiat families have gathered here to trade where the region's major rivers meet the sound. Today, Kotzebue serves as the bustling commercial, medical, and administrative hub for northwest Alaska, supporting a network of smaller surrounding villages.

Daily life here is deeply tied to its remote Arctic location. Because no roads connect Kotzebue to the Alaska highway system, travel and supplies depend entirely on year-round flights and summer barges. Residents adapt to long winter nights, subzero temperatures, and high shipping costs, but the town is well-equipped with local schools, a regional hospital, and a branch campus of the University of Alaska.
