Kountze, TX

Kountze grew around a railroad and ended up with the county courthouse. The Hardin County seat sits at U.S. 69/287 and State Highway 326, about twenty-seven miles northwest of Beaumont. The Sabine and East Texas Railroad established the station in 1881, and the town took its name from financiers Herman and Augustus Kountze. After a courthouse fire, voters moved the county seat to Kountze in the late 1880s; the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway added an east-west route in 1902. Lumbermen and sawmills filled the early economy, with oil discoveries bringing another burst of growth in the 1950s.

Big Thicket National Preserve is the landmark just outside town. Its visitor center sits seven miles north of Kountze on FM 420, and the Longleaf Pine Trail begins there; the preserve's nine ecosystems and Village Creek units put the woods and waterways into the local map. Kountze still runs on county government, Kountze ISD, U.S. highway traffic, and the services gathered around a small courthouse town. The high-school basketball program adds a current local thread: the Lionettes won the 2024-25 UIL Class 3A Division II state championship. Kountze is a place where the courthouse and the thicket share the same road map.
