Koyukuk, AK

Perched along the Yukon River about 30 miles west of Galena, Koyukuk is a tiny Interior village completely off the highway grid. Getting around depends on the seasons, from summer riverboats and supply barges to winter snowmachines and small planes. Spring ice jams along the river frequently cause severe flooding, making this a rugged, tight-knit community where self-reliance is a way of life.
