Kwethluk, AK

Kwethluk is a city in the Bethel Census Area at the confluence of the Kuskokwim and Kwethluk rivers, in the broad Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. The rivers are the community's main orientation points, carrying people, supplies, and seasonal travel through a landscape where channels shift and routes change. The city's name comes from Yup'ik words connected to a river that is "bad" or "unnatural," a reference to that changing course and the way water shapes daily life.

Kwethluk is served by Ket'acik and Aapalluk Memorial School, a K-12 school operated by the Lower Kuskokwim School District. The school is one of the clearest gathering points in a city of roughly eight hundred residents, while river travel and subsistence activities connect households to the surrounding delta. Kwethluk is also known as the birthplace of Saint Olga of Alaska, linking the community to the Orthodox history of western Alaska. Its identity comes from that combination: a river settlement with Yup'ik language and traditions, a local school serving children through graduation, and a spiritual history that reaches far beyond the bends of the two rivers.
