La Fargeville, NY

La Fargeville sits along the Chaumont River in the Town of Orleans, north of Watertown in Jefferson County. The hamlet began as Log Mills around 1816, when a sawmill gave the first settlement its name. John Frederick La Farge arrived in 1826, and the community later took his name; it was once incorporated as a village before dissolving that municipal corporation in 1922. The river runs through the center of the hamlet on its way toward Lake Ontario, so the old mill geography remains part of the way the place is understood.
