La Jara, CO

La Jara is a high-elevation town in Conejos County, set in the San Luis Valley between Alamosa and Antonito. Its story follows the railroad closely. An early settlement dates to 1867, a church marked the community by 1880, and the Denver and Rio Grande built La Jara Station in 1884 after bypassing the older settlement. The new rail town became the municipality that remains today, and the tracks turned the valley's stock raising and farming into a shipping economy, with warehouses, an artesian well, and a business district growing beside the line.

The old depot still sets La Jara's civic map. Built in 1911 in an early Prairie School style, it now serves as Town Hall at Broadway and Main. U.S. Route 285 runs through town, connecting north to Alamosa and south toward the New Mexico line, while the Conejos County Agricultural Museum displays the tools of the valley's farm history nearby. La Jara's name, pronounced with the valley's Spanish rhythm, sits on a town shaped by water tanks, rails, fields, and the high, open country around it.
