La Luz, NM

La Luz lies immediately north of Alamogordo at the mouth of La Luz Canyon, where the Sacramento Mountains meet the eastern side of the Tularosa Basin. Hispanic New Mexican settlers established communities at the canyon mouths in the 1860s, on land with a much older Indigenous history that includes Mescalero Apache presence and earlier peoples. That setting gives La Luz a clear physical relationship to the basin: the community sits at a transition between mountain watercourses, desert flats, and the built-up services of Alamogordo.

The area’s working and cultural life carries both newer and older threads. Holloman Air Force Base is the largest employer in the surrounding region, and La Luz students attend Alamogordo Public Schools. The Tularosa Basin Historical Society preserves local material and teaches the area’s pottery tradition, including the La Luz Pottery Factory built in 1930 by Roland Hazard. The factory made roof tiles, chimney pots, and large pottery until 1949. Today, the canyon, pottery history, and nearby Alamogordo institutions give residents a local frame that connects settlement history with a military-centered regional economy.
