Nestled in the rolling hills between San Diego and El Cajon, La Mesa gives residents a convenient suburban retreat with direct access to the rest of the county. Known as the Jewel of the Hills, La Mesa grew from late-nineteenth-century citrus groves and a railway line into a scenic residential community. You can still see that heritage in the restored 1894 train depot and the distinct architecture scattered across town. Unlike master-planned suburbs built all at once, La Mesa features established neighborhoods filled with mid-century ranch homes, 1920s craftsman bungalows, and hillside properties that offer expansive views of the surrounding valleys. A short drive south, the atmosphere shifts as you enter the historic Village along La Mesa Boulevard. Community events bring plenty of energy to the Village, especially the weekly Friday Farmers Market. Locals fill the boulevard to pick up fresh California produce, grab dinner from street food vendors, and browse artisan goods while live music plays in the background. The market flows right past the Walkway of the Stars, a small pedestrian park decorated with colorful murals and tributes to local volunteers.
